Peak in production effects tomato prices in France

According to an Agreste publication, tomato production had increased by 3% on the 1st August. Over the 2014 harvest production should reach 581,000 tons, of which 45% is vine tomatoes from greenhouses.

The slight decrease in surface, notably under cold greenhouses, does not effect total production which levels to the five-year average.

In July an important influx in tomatoes all over the production region reached over 100,000 tons. Swamping of production, competition from home gardens and weakening demand has effected the decrease in prices of all varieties.
