Tomatoes are Austrians' favourite vegetable

Tomatoes are the Austrians' favourite vegetable, reports the German website Proplanta.de. In the last year Austrians ate 28 kg of this vegetable, often called 'Paradeiser'here, per head of the population. This means that the consumption has almost doubled over the last twenty years.

The Austrian consumer bought 32,676 tonnes of tomatoes over the last year, worth around 103 million Euro. This made it the most bought vegetable, followed by the onion. In total the tomatoes have a share of 41% in the segment of the fruit vegetables. The organic share is 11% in amount and 15% in value.

The professional tomato cultivation in Austria is concentrated in the east of country due to the climate conditions. The state Burgenland has the largest tomato area with 62 hectares, followed by Vienna, Steiermark and Niederösterreich.
