Tomatoes and carrots are the most popular vegetables

Apples and bananas the most sold fruit in Switzerland

Last year apples and bananas were the most sold fruits in Switzerland, reports the German website Gabot.de. Tomatoes and carrots were the most popular vegetables.

Over the last year the Swiss retail sector sold 65,517 tonnes of apples. This made the apple the most popular fruit, followed by bananas in second place with sales of 58,869 tonnes and oranges in third place with sales of 40,135 tonnes. Apples also took first place in sales value (212 million Swiss francs, around 175 million Euro), followed by bananas (155 million Swiss franc, around 128 million Euro) and grapes (113 million Swiss franc, around 93 million Euro). Bananas had the largest organic share (27%). In total the organic share of fruit is 8%.

In vegetables, the consumers most often bought tomatoes. People in Switzerland bought 49,497 tonnes of them last year. This was followed by carrots (42,144 tonnes) and onions (20,601 tonnes) as the most sold vegetables. As far as sales value is concerned tomatoes were in first place (254 million Swiss franc, around 209 million Euro), followed by carrots (100 million Swiss francs, around 82 million Euro) and peppers (93 million Swiss francs, around 76 million Euro). The organic share in vegetables is at 9% for vegetables and is especially high in carrots (17%) and field lettuce (20%).
