Germany: 2014 rhubarb season started early

The 2014 rhubarb season in Germany was unusual in several ways, the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) reports. After an early start to the season, the harvest volume didn't develop the same way as in other years. That led to unusual price movements, reluctance in food retail when it comes to special offers, and a huge decrease in rhubarb purchases by private households.

Until week 10, the initial price level of 370 Euro per 100 kg could largely be maintained. From week 11 onwards, the increasing supply caused a significant decrease in price to set in. In week 18, and with that early May, the average wholesale price reached the lowest level of the season, at 102.05 Euro per 100 kg. With that, the lowest price of the past year was surpassed by almost 20 Euro per 100 kg.
