Producers say there are shortages in southern orchards

Mexico: Good prices for oranges

Given the scarcity of fresh orange in the city markets, the box of this citric is being sold at 100 pesos and farmers predict that the price will increase in the coming weeks.

According to several producers, the sweet orange harvest will begin in October or November so the shortage in orchards will increase prices.

Thus, producers are expecting good profits. Some say that the box of sweet orange could go as high as 200 pesos.

Citrus producers, Adriano Vallejos Cel and Candelario Castillo Yah, said that the late Valencia orange variety crop is already scarce in the region.

The producers stated that the insecticides applied on 17,000 hectares to combat the yellow dragon disease, affected the crops of sweet orange.

They also believe that the orange crop beginning in October and November could be weak across the region.

The 20 kg box of sweet oranges is being sold at 100 pesos in the city markets. The second-class fruits are sold at 80 pesos.

Persian limes, however, are abundant in the markets and the box is being sold at 15 pesos, while avocados are being sold at 70 pesos.
