9,000 ton onion harvest in Mauritius

Mauritius harvested 9,000 tons of onion compared to 7,800 last year. The country will import 7,000 to 8,000 tons this year as annual consumption is around 16,000 to 17,000 tons. To satisfy local demand Mauritius imports onions mainly from India and South Africa.

The food security fund has targeted a 16,000 ton production for 2015. This requires an extra 150 ha of production acreage. To achieve 12,000 tons of production this year, a one off 10% financial aid was applied for onion producers to buy seeds. The varieties farmed in Mauritius are : Belle Rose, Francia, VĂ©ronique, Noflaye and Local Red.
