Scientists: the Moon is lemon-shaped
One of the authors of the research published in Science magazine, is Ian Garrick-Bethell, University of California. He describes the Moon as being “flattened at the poles and bulged at the equator", and compares its shape to the one of a lemon.
Unlike the Earth, the Moon formed about 3.6 billion years ago and was initially much closer to Earth and spinning faster. As the Moon cooled and hardened, the effects of tidal forces froze the surface into a slightly elongated shape with a bulge pointing towards Earth and a corresponding bump on the other side.
Previously there have been many attempts to create a precise map of the Moon surface; however, the craters always hindered.
