Russia detected Mediterranean Fruit Fly in peaches from Turkey

Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Ceratitis capitata Wied.) has been detected in the load of peaches imported from Turkey into Russian Federation, - reported the news agency of Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service.

Over 19.15 tonnes of Turkish peaches contaminated with Mediterranean Fruit Fly were detained at Novorossiysk port, July 28, 2014. Four larvae were found in the fruit and sent to the veterinary laboratory for analysis. The results recognized the larvae as species of Mediterranean Fruit Fly. The required measures are to be taken.

Mediterranean Fruit Fly causes extensive damage to oranges, avocado, figs, coffee beans, bananas, lemons, apricots, apples, plums, grapes, tomatoes, and over 70 other crops. It belongs to a class of the most dangerous and harmful pests, that are spread all over the world. Its larvae cause fruit drop, the flies damage the fruit peel by laying eggs, and thus, causing mould and rot development.
