Italy: Foreign demand of mini-watermelons increasing slightly

"Slight increase in the consumption of mini-watermelons abroad in the last ten days, though prices are lower than 2013," explains Antonio Latorrata, sole administrator of Agricola Ceres srl.

Antonio Latorrata.

The company cultivates mainly table grapes, followed by citrus fruit, apricots, cabbages and mini-watermelons.

"Despite the weather, yields were excellent this year, as much as 60 tons per hectare. We mainly cultivate the Nikas F1 variety, which is the most popular due to the firm flesh, few seeds and good shelf-life."

The taste is exceptional and the sugar content is high (over 13° Brix). The fruit weighs between 1.5 and 3 kg and the rind is thinner than that of the traditional varieties.

Mini-watermelons are packaged in boxes holding 3 to 8 pieces and are destined to domestic and foreign retailers. "Eastern Europe prefers bigger fruits, Scandinavia prefers seedless varieties whereas Germany favours smaller fruits."
