"The strawberry market is similar to that of cherries, though we only have Italian produce available. Prices are high - €5-6/kg and the fruit looks nice with quite a good shelf-life," explains Roberto Piazza, director of Fedagromercati Acmo.
Apparently, what saved strawberries this summer was the "really low supply". There would have been problems if we had to deal solely with demand as the weather did not help summer fruit consumption. Logistics also helped, as it takes a while for strawberries from Northern Italy to reach all the markets, thus affecting prices."
"At the moment, we are selling around 2,000 kg a week of produce from Trentino Alto Adige (Elsanta Variety). Strawberries are very good this year, very resistant and with no residues. The ones from Belgium and Holland might also be available, but prices are too high at €7-8 kg," explains Massimo Castrogiovani from Ortomercato srl.
"Last year prices were lower, but at this time of year strawberries are no longer the favourite fruit and they mainly sell in bars, for example."
