Good asparagus and strawberry harvest in Schleswig-Holstein

In the German state of Schleswig-Holstein 441 hectares of asparagus were grown this year, reports the German website Proplanta.de. From this area 353 hectares of asparagus were harvested. The area where asparagus is grown has increased by one quarter since 2007, according to the Bureau of Statistics for the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The average yield per hectare is estimated to be around 4,400 tons. This would be eight percent more than last year and 14 percent more than the long-term average, which means this year was a top harvest. Germans in Schleswig-Holstein assume a harvest of almost 1,600 tons of asparagus.

The strawberry harvest in Schleswig-Holstein is also going well. This year there are 1,193 hectares of strawberries, in which 903 hectares can be harvested. This is about the same area as in recent years. On top of this, around 18 hectares will be grown under high canopies. According to first estimates (we are about half way through the harvest year) the yield for strawberries grown outside is expected to reach 11,600 tons per hectare. That would be six percent higher than last year and three percent higher higher than the long-term average. In total 10,700 tons of strawberries are expected to be harvested in Schleswig-Holstein.
