35% more than last year

Thüringen has very good strawberry harvest

According to provisional numbers strawberries were grown this year on 180 hectares in the German state of Thüringen, reports the German website Proplanta.de. Compared with the previous year there has been a 6% increase (11 hectares) in the growing area. This makes the total strawberry acreage the largest it has been since 1991.

According to the Bureau of Statistics from the state of Thüringen the yield of strawberries per hectare is estimated to be 12 tons for the month of June. This would be 2.6 tons (27%) more than last year. It looks like the long-term average (from 2008 to 2013) of 9.3 tons per hectare will be surpassed by more than a quarter.

The total harvest volume will reach 2,170 tons per hectare due to expansion of the growing area and a higher yield. This is a 35 percent increase from last year (1,600 tons) and a 68 percent increase from the 2008-2013 average of 1,290 tons.
