Portuguese stonefruit producers also concerned

The Council of Ministers of the European Union and the Committee of Management have received demands from peach and nectarine producers from Italy, France and Spain for urgent, extraordinary anti-crisis measures to try salvaging the current campaign.

Meanwhile, Portugal, and more precisely the region of Cova da Beira, has also reported that the prices obtained by producers are too low and hat cooperatives, producers and other commercial structures are facing extreme difficulties to market their stonefruit at reasonable prices.

"Prices are currently unacceptable, since the market is flooded with Spanish peaches at prices that don't even cover the harvesting costs," report sources from the AJAP (Association of Young Growers of Portugal).

The Association called on national leaders to "take measures within their power, eventually in coordination with other countries if necessary, in order to minimise the damage and ensure that the work and effort of many growers throughout the year will not be for nothing."
