Massimo Marchetti (La Diamantina)

Italy: Excellent quality for summer apples and pears

Massimo Marchetti, chairman of La Diamantina PO, talked about the top fruit season.

Gala trees.

"The Carmen and Santa Maria pear varieties that we are currently harvesting are 15 days early with respect to 2013. Gala apple harvests will also start early."

"Fruits look very good and the colours are great. In addition, there are no particular phitosanitary problems."

"The trees produced a lot of fruit this year, so thinning took longer, but grades look great. It will be interesting to see how we can deal with a market where last year's stock is still available."

Santa Maria.

As regards pears, "the size of Santa Maria pears is impressive this year. The Conference, Kaiser and Abate Fetel varieties also look good, we will have to see how things go."

La Diamantina produces around 300-400 tons of Santa Maria and 800 tons of Gala every year.

Abate Fetel.

Part of the produce is sold with the Belgian Univeg group, whereas the rest is sold directly.
