International Asparagus Congress

Peru: Advances in new asparagus hybrids

The Peruvian Asparagus and Vegetables Institute (IPEH) organizes the VI International Asparagus Congress (CIE), Leading the Market with Innovation and Excellence, that will be held at the campus of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM) on September 18 and 19.

Carlos Zamorano Macchiavello, executive director of the IPEH, stated that one of the topics that would be addressed in the Congress was the genetic improvement and progress in the development of Peruvian asparagus hybrids.

According to Zamorano, the IPEH is working with the UNALM in the creation and production of a Peruvian asparagus hybrid. "The idea is to obtain a Peruvian seed that would allow us to move forward especially on the issue of productivity," he said.

The congress' agenda also includes issues related to technological innovation, automation in the industry, and the market's evolution.

"Regarding the technological innovation we are opening the doors to much of the work done in Peru that deal in different areas. For example, in logistic processes such as the reception and handling of goods, "he said.

He also said that they would be discussing very technical issues, such as allelopathic plants, and practical applications. We will also be discussing about the carbon footprint of the asparagus industry, an issue that is gaining prominence in the markets, he said.

A Chilean company specializing in the sale of machinery would be speaking about automation. "We're going to have a couple of sessions about the automation of the asparagus industry and about automation in general and about automation at harvest time," he said.

Regarding the market and marketing, Zamorano announced that they would be presenting information about the Asparagus National Census being performed by the IPEH and its partners in order to find out how the Peruvian asparagus industry is currently positioned. In addition, they would also be discussing the production of competing markets, such as Mexico and China.
