Argentina: Strike at the port of Rosario affects exports

Yesterday, CGT San Lorenzo began an indefinite strike in the 22 port terminals in San Lorenzo, Puerto General San Martin and Timbúes as they are striking for a number of union and wage demands, union sources informed.

The strike affects 30 ports that are used by grain ships and 6 others used by vessels and twenty ships overseas.

The general secretary of the CGT, Edgardo Quiroga, told that "the protest started on the 18, but there will be no need for any picket lines because the stoppage is total."

The leader added that "among the complaints is the lock out developed by the owners of Papelera Andino, which have paralysed their production since May 30 as they haven’t made payments for three fortnights, haven’t paid the mid year bonus, and there is the possibility they will lose their jobs."

Furthermore, he stated, "We also demand the electricity rates for the dockworkers of Puerto General San Martin be updated and that the company Cintra complies with the regional minimum wage payment and getting up to date on their payments with their workers."

Finally, Quiroga said that "the strike will continue until we get a final solution to our claims."
