Tons of frozen peas for school canteens in Brittany

Eat five fruit and vegetables a day! Despite the well known slogan, it is often hard to incite young people to consume fruit and vegetables. To enable young people to discover the natural flavour of frozen vegetables, professionals within the sector in Brittany are giving 100,000 portions of peas to school canteens in the region in September. The operation is led by the agricultural cooperative Triskalia and their brand Paysan breton-Gelagri and the group Pomona and their brand Passion Froid.

On Thursday 150 professionals (producers, processors, retailers) will take part in the harvest. The harvest will take place under the watchful eye of Agri Confiance, the label used by cooperatives to respect resource and traceability.

The words ''frozen'' and ''industrial'' often go together in the consumer mind... Yet, RĂ©gis Pennarun, Head of Marketing Development at Gelagri says that ''freezing is the best guarantee of a perfect conservation of taste and nutrition quality of a vegetable''. There is only a 4 hour delay between harvest in the field and freezing.''
