Spain: Large distributors blamed for high losses in potato sector

The General Secretary of UPA-Granada, Nicolás Chica, has denounced the massive losses that potato producers will have to face with the harvest in full swing, due to the "abusive" policies of distribution companies.

In a statement, Chica estimated the losses that each producer will suffer at 25,000 Euro, after a big drop in prices caused by the introduction into the market of potatoes from non-European countries.

The UPA has stated that producing a kilo of potatoes costs around 14 cents, although they are sold to consumer for 8 cents.

"This year, the production of potatoes has intensified and, unfortunately, we will have to report huge losses once again, which will be the result of large distributors maintaining their policies of selling at prices that cause huge losses," denounced Chica.

UPA-Granada has also called for consumers to purchase potatoes of Spanish origin and thus help prevent this disastrous situation for the sector.
