Italy: We must keep an eye on microgreen vegetables

"We have been producing microgreen vegetables such as amaranth, cress, lettuce, cabbage and beetroot for a few years now. The production period generally goes from October to March. Some months, microgreens represent 20% of the total production," says Fabio Altamura, who manages Azienda Agricola Altamura together with brothers Alfonso and Giuseppe

"With respect to previous years, there was no major increase in demand and prices are similar to those of other products in our range, especially since microgeens are harvested a little earlier than the rest and are a little shorter."

Altamoura exports microgreens especially to Community countries. "There is not a variety more in demand than others. Also, demand is not great on the domestic market as microgreens are a niche product. Only specialised stores have them." According to Fabio, these types of vegetables are definitely more popular abroad, even though they are not a mass product.

When asked if Italy has the potential to become a leader in the microgreen sector, Fabio says that "it is indeed a market we must keep an eye on. There is potential for growth."
