Free trade talks between the EU and Japan continued

The free trade talks between the EU and Japan are being continued, reports the German website Fruchthandel.de The EU member states gave the go ahead for this at the end of June. There was already a new round of negotiations in Tokyo last week.

The decision to continue free trade talks was supported by COPA-COGECA (the partnership of European agricultural representatives), FoodDrinkEurope (the European branch organisation for the food industry) and CELCAA (umbrella organisation for the European food trade). In a joint declaration they indicated they were convinced that a treaty would have positive effects for both the EU and Japan - due to open markets and uniform standards.

According to the European Commission the European food and agricultural industry exported wares worth 5.5 billion Euro to Japan in recent years. The import of agrarian products and food from Japan to the EU had a value of around 600 million Euro.
