Switzerland: record harvest of strawberries once again

The strawberry harvest in Switzerland has reached a peak for the fourth year in a row, reports the Swiss website lid.ch. The Swiss production was able to maintain its position despite the large price differences between domestic and imported fruit.

At the end of June 6,957 tonnes of Swiss strawberries were harvested, reports the Swiss Ministry of Agriculture (BLW). In 2013 6,995 tonnes of strawberries were harvested throughout Switzerland. The production amount rose between 2008 and 2013 by 35% (+1,814 tonnes). This is due to an increase in the cultivation area and an increase in productivity.

In 2013 in Switzerland 14,173 tonnes of strawberries were sold in total (Swiss and imported strawberries). This makes the strawberries the best sold berry in the Swiss retail at a distance. Despite large price differences between Swiss strawberries and foreign strawberries the Swiss strawberry production was successful. Domestic strawberries cost 14.24 Swiss francs (11.73 Euro) per kg, imported strawberries cost 5.49 Swiss francs (4.52 Euro) per kg.
