Peru: Tangerine production will increase by 8.5% this year

According to a study by Maximixe Centre for Business Intelligence and Markets, by the end of 2014 tangerine production is expected to grow by 8.5%, when compared to last year, and amount to 340,300 tons.

The firm says the growth is based on the increased production at Lima, as there is an increase in green areas in the provinces of CaƱete and Huaral, which increased by 17% and 1% respectively in the first half of the year.

There is also expectation that the tangerine production in the region of Ica will improve, as the plants have reached a maturity stage that will increase their performance and the SENASA has been controlled the fruit fly disease.

It should be noted that, in the coming years, the production of tangerines will continue to increase stimulated by the increased profitability of the fruit compared to other fruits; for example, the peach crops in Huaral are being replaced by tangerine crops. According to these expectations, the harvested area will advance 4.7 percent and the yields will grow by 3.6 percent.

Exports of tangerine, of all types and varieties, will grow by 21.6 percent and amount to $107 million dollars, driven by the increased demand of the United Kingdom, the United States and the Netherlands; countries which value Peruvian tangerine for its quality, presentation and duration.

Tangelo and satsuma exports are also expected to continue increasing, and the W. Murcott varieties are expected to become more dynamic, especially to Hong Kong.

According to this scenario, the average export price is expected to increase by 0.6 percent.
