US (CA): Spinach market expected to pick up

After several weeks of low prices for Spinach out of California, growers and shippers are expecting prices for Spinach to increase in the coming days.

“The market's been pretty flat for the past three weeks,” said Jeff Halfpenny of Talley Farms. Growers out of the Central Coast region had to deal with prices around $5.75 to $6.75 per box, which, according to Halfpenny, is just enough for some growers to cover their packing costs. But supplies will likely take a dip in the near future, so prices should pick up.

“Today was the first time we got the feeling that the market will get off the floor,” said Halfpenny. “There will be light supplies and production gaps in the next few weeks, so that means the market should get stronger.” He anticipates prices to hover around $7.00 per box, depending on the label.

“The general feeling is better,” said Halfpenny. “We should see the market come up tomorrow.”
