Mexico: Onion prices rise due to excess rain

The price of onions in supermarkets and the Mexico City's Supply Centre has customers crying.

In the last week, this product reached an average price of nearly 14 pesos per kilo in stores, 91.4 percent more than in the same period of 2013.

Onion prices at the Supply Centre amounted to 6.5 pesos, 62.5 percent more than the 4 pesos they cost a year ago.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the increase in prices was the result of a decrease in supply due to the persistent rains in Zacatecas and to a lesser extent, in Chihuahua, the current major suppliers.

For the next fortnight, according to information from the agency, the product's price could increase if it continued to rain in these areas. However, prices could go down if the onions from Baja California began entering the market in the same time period.

Juan Carlos Anaya, an analyst from the Agricultural Market Advisory Group (GCMA), said the onion crops had been damaged by the excess moisture resulting from the rainfall, and that there had been a contraction in the income of good quality product to the Supply Centre.

Francisco Rosas, technical secretary of the Onion Product System of Tamaulipas, said the excess of water damaged the crop, made it difficult to harvest and affected the supply.
