CA: Dip in supplies makes for tight Ontario pepper market

A gap in supplies in Ontario has made for a momentarily tight pepper market. Supplies are expected to improve, however, as the season progresses.

“If you had peppers, you could capitalize on the market,” said David Pereira of Mor Gro Farms in Ontario. “But the harvest was low, which caused a bit of a spot market.” He pointed to a late harvest for Le Rouge peppers for the gap in supplies experienced recently. But because that's a temporary situation, he doesn't expect the current situation to continue throughout what has been a good season.

“We had a bit of a heat spell last week, but it's been a cool summer,” explained Pereira. “Intense heat puts a strain on plants, so cool nights help fruit ripen more naturally, so the harvest comes in more steady.” Because of the recent dip in supplies, pricing has been higher than in previous years, but as the season sorts itself out, pricing should get back to normal levels.

“The situation will improve moving forward,” said Pereira. “As soon as the pipeline gets filled, things will get back to normal. The pepper market will be more stable, with excellent quality and excellent sizing.”
