Italy: Blueberries are the colour of optimism

"Blueberries are our favourite fruit as the great results of the last seasons meant we managed to reach the objectives we had intended to achieve in 2016. 300 tons of produce have been estimated for this season," explains Simone Bernardi, chairman of Lagnasco Group.

"In order to celebrate this achievement, we decided to introduce a new packaging for the 2014 produce destined to Northern Europe (Scandinavia and Denmark)."

Prices of fruit have dropped a little "but we should be oriented towards innovation and target differentiation nonetheless. That's what we decided to do by focusing on exports."

For Lagnasco Group, varietal research and innovation are a real strategy, "that's why we promoted meetings on pruning and blueberry orchard management. The right competences are in fact needed to increase yields per hectare, diminish harvesting times and maintain high quality standards."

"At a moment when blueberry cultivation is an excellent alternative to kiwi orchards, which were strongly hit by the Psa, these small fruits can indeed bring new hope to growers, but they need to rationalise production costs and choose a high-quality product."
