Venezuela: Onion price expected to increase again

Onion vendors from the municipal market of Anaco estimated that the price of onions would increase by the end of this month, even though the kilogram of onions had increased, depending on the product's quality, from 50 Bolivares to 80, 90 or even 100 Bolivares.

According to Rafael Marcano, a retailer, the increase in price of onions would affect the whole population.

"Everyone eats onions, one way or another," said the trader, who added that, "it is a product used in most dishes in Venezuela."

"We have noticed a decline in onion purchases, precisely because its price is very high," he said.

The trader emphasized that producers were limited to plant what they could because they hadn't been able to get seeds for the past year.

"As a solution, farmers are planting small onions, from where they can get three big ones", he said.

Marcano also noted that there were onion seeds in Venezuela because there were no dollars in the country to import them.

"It's not a product that the country produces, so we have to buy the seeds from abroad," Marcano said, adding that if there are "no dollars, we can't buy or sow anything."

The seller noted that the production has decreased because of the rainy season in areas where the onions are grown.

Marcano said that when the producers couldn't move the onions when it rained because they would spoil.
