French apricots Magique, Lowie and Albert at Fruit Vandepoel

"The best apricots come from France"

The stonefruit is in full production and wholesaler Fruit Vandepoel has various apricots in the assortment. "At the moment we are only supplying French apricots. We always have Spanish at the start of the season, but the best apricots are from France," says Freddy Vandepoel, the brother of owner Wim Vandepoel. "We import the apricots from the Provence, there are two of our regular suppliers there. The products are marketed under the brand Magique, Lowie and Albert. Albert has been a well known brand in Brussels. We are the only ones in Brussels who market the brand Albert."

"The flavour of these apricots is deliciously sweet and they are popular at the moment. Apricots are sold well here in Brussels, especially hand apricots, such as the varieties Bergarouge and Orange Red. The Orange Red of the size 3A are the most popular, they are the biggest calibre. A is small, double A is medium and 3A is coarser. These apricots are mainly bought by speciality businesses."

Normal prices

Freddy indicates that the prices are good at the moment. "Around two Euro is paid for them at the moment, that's normal for this time of year. The French are higher in price on average than for instance the Spanish, but a lot of customers will pay it for the flavour. We also sell apricots for preserves, a different variety is used specially for this. One of the preserve varieties that we sell is Kyoto. The price for preserve apricots is between a Euro and 1.50."

He looks towards the season with optimism. "We have two important suppliers who can continue to supply until September. The harvest was good this year, production wasn't as good last year. Apricots have to be properly ripe; that's the best way to eat them."
