Italy: Ortofrutticola Magliozzi conquers the market with courgette flowers

Ortofrutticola Magliozzi aims at conquering a niche market with the high-quality of its products.

The main product is courgette flowers, which represent 80% of the total and are available 365 days a year.

"The company was established in 2000. It is a family business that started by collecting flowers from small producers in Fondi and packing them by hand."

In time, the company started to expand and conquered the domestic market.

"We started to get our supplies from Agro pontino and we have direct relations with the producers. In the meantime, Ortofrutticola Magliozzi also invested in technology, introducing new packaging lines. We are fact equipped with two packaging lines which are 9 metres long and can process 1,000 trays per hour. After these initial investments, big clients such as Coop and Conad supermarkets contacted us."

Ortofrutticola Magliozzi expanded even further and has been supplying also some foreign markets, France and England in particular, for the past 3 years. It is also working on new techniques to extend the shelf-life of its products.

In the last few years it has been using the controlled atmosphere technique to satisfy the foreign markets and it moved the packaging process to a warehouse with a state-of-the-art line that can package in flow-packs and ATMs up to a 110 trays per minute.

This way, courgette flowers can last up to 6 days. A new branded polypropylene packaging was also created.

At the moment, Magliozzi can count on 40 producers growing the flowers on over 100 hectares; 2 refrigerated trucks to collect them; 3 packaging lines; 9 employees; 2 assistants and 2 partners. In the last 4 years, the turnover grew from €850,000 in 2010 to €1,500,000 in 2013.

In addition to courgette flowers, the company also sells fresh herbs like bay, dill, basil, borage, chervil, coriander, cress, celery hearts, tarragon, chives, wild fennel, edible flowers, liquorice ,marjoram, lemon balm, mint and mentuccia, myrtle, oregano, nettle, parsley, rosemary, rocket, sage and thyme. All these herbs are sold in 50g packets.

In order to guarantee the high quality of their products, the company uses refrigerated units with thermal panels to reduce cooling times, while the dehumidification system guarantees the optimal preservation of the product.

In addition, a distribution centre is always available to sort all the orders sent in by the clients.
