Panama: fruit and vegetable prices increased by almost 100%

Having a salad with lunch or dinner has become almost impossible. The increase in prices of locally produced fruits and vegetables has made it hard for families to buy them.

According to statistical reports of Acodeco, consumers are currently paying up to U.S. $1.15 per a pound (about half a kilo) of lettuce, 18.5% more than in 2007 when they would pay $0.97 for the same amount.

Potatoes, which are widely consumed, have increased by 82% over the past seven years.

In 2007, a pound of potatoes was sold at $0.45, and it is currently being sold at $0.82 in San Miguelito, La Chorrera and Arraijan.

However, according to data from April, consumers can buy 50 pounds of potatoes at $24.67 in the Central Agricultural Market, ($0.49 per pound).
