Longer drought and more water scarcity in the EU due to climate change

It is expected that rising temperatures and changing weather patterns, caused by climate change, will change the water supply in Europe, reports the Swiss website Swisscofel.ch. The severity and length of the droughts in Europe will increase dramatically towards end of the century, according to new researches. This increased the concerns about a rise in extreme droughts and the severe consequences these droughts can have. For instance, it is estimated that the period of drought in south and central Europe in 2003 caused 8.7 billion worth of economic damage. Research also shows that a number of European countries could face a loss of up to 80% of river water in the years running up to 80%.

However, the researchers emphasised that the research presumed the scenario with the highest figures of water use. The results are a worst case scenario as far as water use is concerned.
