Germany: Organic market statistics published

Every year, the German 'Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung' (BLE), commissioned by the German Ministry of Agriculture, publishes some general statistics about the organic market. In 2013, Germany had a total of 23,271 organic growers, who cultivated a total area of ​​1,055,869 hectares (+2 % compared to 2012). The total number of companies in the bio-industry totalled 35,184. 

While the number of growing companies in 2013 reached a total of 23,271 (+239 compared to 2012), the number of processors totalled 8,231 (-61 compared to 2012). The Federal State of Bayern had the largest organic acreage (approximately 215,000 hectares), followed by Brandenburg (approximately 136,000 hectares), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (approximately 125,000 hectares) and Baden-Württemberg (approximately 121,000 hectares).
