Mexico: FAO warns banana producers in Tabasco of pest

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned banana producers of Tabasco about the plague known as Panama disease.

This banana disease caused serious problems in Tabasco in the early twentieth century.

"It's a warning about a plague, a strain called Panama disease. This strain caused havoc in 1913 in Tabasco and affected plantations in Xalapa in those years," said Pedro Jiménez León, Tabasco 's Agriculture Secretary.

According to Jimenez, the plague affects different varieties of banana in four stages, so they verify the plantations in the 17 municipalities of the state.

"The livestock sanitation committee works closely with the producers. We have 80 monitoring points throughout the state to be vigilant. We perform the monitoring and scans in 3,600 hectares," said Jimenez.

There are 16,000 hectares of banana plantations in Tabasco that are the livelihood for nearly 50,000 families.

"Our plantations are clean in that sense. What worries us is the mucus and the sigatoka," said Miguel Perez Acosta, banana producer.

"The Panama disease is a bacterium that concerns us in the extermination of our plantations, but its not present here, in Teapa, we've been controlling it up to now and we don't have it," said Héctor Domínguez Zurita, banana producer.

The entity produces some 50,000 tons of bananas a year and exports it to Russia, Europe, and Mexico, among other countries.
