Panama: Banana producers are demanding $10 million dollars

Suppliers of the dissolved Multiple Services Cooperative of Port Armuelles (Coosemupar, RL) asked the Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Frank De Lima, to manage an extraordinary $10 million dollar credit to pay for the cooperative's liquidation.

The letter written by Simon Lezcano, on behalf of the Union of Workers of the Chiriqui Land (SITRACHICO), and Osvaldo de Obaldía, provider for Coosemupar, states their concern about the decision to transfer the organization's property and assets to the MEF's Real Property without complying with the payment of suppliers, which in the opinion of the signers, violates the cooperatives law.

SITRACHILCO, they said, contributed more than half a million dollars to Coosemupar for union dues, so it is unfair that the cooperative's assets are transferred to the State and the union is not refunded the money it contributed.

They weighted the government's responsibility to comply with the workers by paying Coosemupar's debt, but warned that not paying the suppliers will lead to future civil and penal legal action.
