Grillin' Goodness with Turbana and Weber

US (NJ): Turbana, Weber, Shoprite join forces creating a tropical twist for the 4th

While consumers are busy firing up their grills and preparing for Fourth of July backyard barbecues, Turbana and Weber are slated to introduce a tropical twist on the traditional American holiday. The banana and plantain producer is partnering with top grilling producer, Weber Grills, and New Jersey ShopRite stores during the last two weekends of June to provide guests with an experiential grilling event promoting plantains while simultaneously generating awareness about a cause deeply rooted in the local community.

In connection to Turbana’s ongoing “Growing Smiles, Sharing Goodness” movement, this event will be supporting Learning Through Gardening, a program created by the New Jersey Agricultural Society. Learning Through Gardening provides elementary schools with the knowledge and tools to build vegetable gardens to use as outdoor classrooms and teach students about healthy eating and caring for the environment. With the launch of this community event, Turbana, Weber and ShopRite continue their goal of making meaningful connections with the communities in which they operate.

“We are truly grateful that Turbana, Weber, and ShopRite have included Learning Through Gardening in this exciting event. This is a tremendous opportunity for our school gardening program to showcase the work we've been doing throughout New Jersey to create gardens in elementary schools. The ShopRite community will be able to see our gardens, read what students have written about their gardening experience, and learn how our program is teaching New Jersey children to make healthy food choices,” said Carolyn Taylor, director of Learning Through Gardening.

The event, called “Grillin’ Goodness with Turbana and Weber,” will kick off with grilling and gardening tents set up outside of six ShopRite stores in the New Jersey area, including Cherry Hill, Cinnaminson, Brooklawn, Medford, Sewell, and Jackson. Local chefs will be firing up Weber grills to demonstrate how to grill some of Turbana’s secret sweet and savoury summer recipes.

ShopRite customers will experience Weber grill masters at work, sample the summer flavours of grilled plantains, and interact with Learning Through Gardening to see how the initiative is benefiting local schools. Students involved in the program will put their garden beds on display, allowing guests to learn more about the program and see the fruits of their labour. Through this immersive grilling experience, Turbana, Weber and ShopRite seek to place unfamiliar produce in a familiar context and teach consumers how versatile plantains can be, all while making a positive impact on the local community.

What truly sets this event apart is that customers can contribute directly to Learning Through Gardening as well. At ShopRite stores across the country, guests who purchase Turbana plantains using their Price Plus Club cards during the promotional period of June 20 to August 31 will be automatically entered to win a Weber Spirit E-310 LP gas grill, while a portion of their plantain purchase will simultaneously benefit Learning Through Gardening. These proceeds will help the community organization provide schools with materials to build vegetable gardens, grow healthy kids, and so much more. In this way, the trio is inspiring people to get involved and providing individuals with avenues to personally make a difference in their communities.

The event is also being complemented by the support of major players in the digital realm who are working alongside the brands to promote the initiative. With the help of the hashtag #GrillinGoodness, a team of Twitter stars ranging from mommy bloggers to grill masters will be working together to host a Twitter party aimed at inspiring people to integrate plantains into their grilling recipes during the Fourth of July. The party will be hosted on Wednesday, June 18th from 12 a.m. to 1 p.m. - two days before the New Jersey grilling goodness begins - and will provide ideas for recipes, grilling tips, and nutritional facts about plantains. Additionally, the brands are extending an invitation for South Jersey bloggers and local media to participate in the in-store grilling events in New Jersey in order to garner the support of the local community.
