Mexico: Tamaulipas expects to achieve a record lemon harvest

Tamaulipas expects to export 30,000 tons of lemons to the United States within the 2014-2015 export cycle, thus surpassing the 28,000 tons reached in the 2013-2014 campaign.

Humberto Ramírez Vázquez, deputy of federal plant health, said this process began with the registration of local packers dedicated to the delivery of this citric to the neighbouring country.

He also said they expected to issue 1,700 international export licenses, just as in 2013.

The presence of lemon produced at Tamaulipas in the global markets, he said, strengthened in the previous period as they sold 28,000 tons of this lemon.

Fortunately, he says, the export rate is still increasing, allowing Tamaulipas to position itself as the leading exporter of this product in the international market.

He noted that the economic benefit generated by this business process strengthened the generation of new jobs in Tamaulipas, as well as the modernization of agricultural practices and added value services required for the certification demanded by the food industry.

He explains that the citrus that isn't exported is destined for domestic juice manufacturers for the extraction of essential oils, simple juices and concentrates, and that the fruit's shell is processed to obtain pectin for the food export industry.
