Ecuador: Banana sales increased abroad

The banana exporter in Ecuador reports success: the export of bananas and cooking bananas increased by 1.07% in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the first quarter of 2013, according to the Central Bank of Ecuador. This is an increase of 658.8 million American dollars (around 487 million Euro) to 670.2 million American dollars (around 485.4 million Euro).

Eduardo Ledesma, president of the banana exporters' union, estimates an even higher increase "95.3 million boxes of bananas (with a value of over 700 million American dollars) was exported, whilst in the same period in 2013 83.2 million boxes of bananas were sold." This is an increase of 14.54%. According to Ledesma the Edcuadorian banana sector is back to a regular level, and around 280 million boxes will be exported this year, around the same amount as in 2011.
