German mushroom production increased by 13% in 2013

Around 59,000 tonnes of mushrooms were harvested in Germany in 2013, from companies with a production area of over 0.1 hectares. The German Bureau for Statistics (Destatis) has now announced that this means that the production of mushrooms in Germany has increased by 13% compared to 2012, reports the German website Fruchthandel.de.

The total harvest amount of consumption funghi was around 60,000 tonnes in Germany. With a share of 99%, almost the entire production consisted of mushrooms. The remaining funghi were regular oyster mushrooms, shiitakes and other special funghi. There are only nine German states in which consumption mushrooms are grown on a large scale on 264 hectares in total. Over half of the cultivation area is in the state of Lower Saxony (133 hectares).
