Mexico: Bad year for vegetables

Carlos Alberto Lopez Esquer reported that this season had been a bad year for many of the crops that vegetable growers and cereal producers cultivate, but that the Yaqui Valley's was still held as one of the best growing areas in the country.

The president of the Vegetable Growers Association of Yaqui and Mayo (APHYM) said that, overall, it had been a bad year in terms of prices, as many products, such as tomato, tomatillo, potatoes and pumpkins had prices below production costs this year.

Tomato producers who were not able to export won't do well because the crop had no market value in Mexico this season.

Vegetable growers from Yaqui and Mayo established a planting area of about ten thousand hectares this crop season. The main crops cultivated were potatoes, pumpkins, tomatoes, watermelons and peppers, among others.

The good news is that the crops' health was maintained this year and there are even producers who have already performed tracing actions in order to continue to maintain the good health of the Yaqui Valley.
