Good demand for limes

"Brazil: "World Cup likely to cause problems in horticultural supply to Europe"

At the moment there is good demand for limes. This, according to Joey Dane, of Denimpex, it is due to the weather warming up, which results in a growing demand for tropical (mix) drinks in which limes are a essential ingredient. "The limited supply and high prices of lemons is another reason why demand is so good. Both Brazil and Mexico are currently loading shipments bound to Europe; a market where Brazil is still ahead. Prices are good, of between €12.00 and €13.00 per box, depending on calibres. For the Mexican produce, customers are willing to pay +/- €0.50 more."

"In the run-up to the World Cup in Brazil, problems in the country's supply to Europe are very likely to arise. This will not only apply to limes, but also to mangoes and to the new ginger campaign which is just around the corner. What we hear from Brazil, is that many expect the country not to be ready for such a massive event as a World Cup and this will therefore lead to logistical problems resulting in a much more limited supply for us in Europe. Additionally, domestic consumption during the World Cup will also increase because of the massive flow of tourists," says Joey.

"The current storms in Mexico affecting one of the largest lime producing areas also foreshadows a limited supply. It is expected that loading and unloading activities at the port of Veracruz will not be able to take place in a normal manner. We are therefore very optimistic that prices will remain stable in the coming weeks for both Brazilian and Mexican limes," continues the importer.

The Brazilian ginger season is also around the corner and we will ship the first container to Europe next week. Just like our limes, we will pack and sell the ginger under our own exclusive brand Delicio Frutas and make it available from the third/fourth week of June. Unlike other Brazilian ginger exporters, ours is the only one at the moment with a valid GlobalGAP certificate," concludes Joey.
