Sweden remains, in terms of both production and consumption of organic produce, far behind Denmark. The use of bio there is almost twice as high. Why? Largely because Denmark set up an ambitious organic policy, both in terms of lower prices and volume. Successive Danish governments have long since seen the benefits of organic agriculture as a priority. Sweden, in contrast, seems to opt for conventional agriculture.
About half of the organic products sold in Sweden are imported. A missed opportunity for the Swedish growers. And a shame for Swedish consumers, because many want more bio on the shelves.
The biggest reason people choose organic food is for health reasons. There are concerns about chemicals in food. More and more studies show the link between health and chemicals in everyday life. Recently tested NFA fruits showed traces of pesticides in 9 of 10 cases, but not so in organic fruits.
Proponents of bio therefore believe that the government should do more to promote organic farming in the country. Retailer Coop recently organized an Eco-week. The chain wants to capitalize on the growing demand for naturally produced food. However, specific targets are missing. Therefore, the industry recently introduced several prime objectives:
- Setting up a better bio-policy
- Research in opportunities for organic production.
- Support for innovation in production technology.
- Focus on the export of organic products.
- Financing a Swedish Organic Trade Association which can offer training and advisory activities and can develop distribution channels
