Belarus: New production line of vacuum-sealed vegetables put into operation

JSC "Gamma vkusa" - "Gamut of taste" (Kleczky district, Minsk region) started a new production line of vacuum-sealed vegetables. According to General Director Nadezhda Palchinsky, the company’s products can already be found on the shelves of the capital's shops.

"Whole or diced, shredded, julienned beets, carrots, potatoes of various quantities from 0.5 kg to 5kg are vacuum-sealed. The packed vegetables, raw or heat-treated, are fully ready to be put into green salads or vegetable soups," - says N. Palchinsky. Mushrooms and beans will be added to the new product assortment in the near future.

There is a demand for these products as no one manufactures similar agricultural goods in Belarus. Russia has expressed a real interest in the products and trial consignments have been already shipped to Eastern neighbours.

Two local farms will be engaged in growing potatoes for the new production line. In addition, 15 ha of carrots, 3 ha of potatoes and 5 ha of beets were planted in the company’s own garden to ensure the smooth operation of the line.

The JSC processes 3-4 tons of apples, about 3 tons of carrots, 1 ton of pumpkins and 1 ton of marrows a year. According to N. Palchinsky, the enterprise is provided with local raw vegetables and fruits up to 90%. Company’s own garden of 116 ha was planted in 2011 and its area will be expanded up to 200 ha by 2016. "We started cultivating raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, gooseberries, red and black currants in addition to apples. 20 ha of fruit trees and 20 ha of currants will yield this year for the first time and we also expect our first crop of strawberries," - said the head of the enterprise.

"Private farmers grow courgettes and marrows for baby foods production. We provide them with seeds. Experts in our laboratory monitor nitrate levels, not only of ripe vegetables, but also during their growth and maturation. We exert strict control. Only manual labour for weeding is used in the field to exclude chemical treatment of crops," - says N. Palchinsky.
