Italy: The Goji-berry phenomenon as seen by Noberasco

"Soft fruit consumption has increased a lot in the past few years. The dried fruit section is worth €6.5 million, equal to 260 tons of produce. Half of the upward trend is represented by Goji berries," explains Carlo Mangini, Sales manager for Noberasco, a leader in the dried fruit sector.

Goji berries come from Tibet, China and Mongolia and are considered a "super-fruit" thanks to their huge antioxidant value. Eating 20 grams of these fruits every day is extremely good for the health.

"We started selling this product on the market through various channels in both single-dose packets, ideal when you're on the go, and family 250 g packets."

Response was beyond expectations especially in the flagship store "Noberasco 1908", inaugurated in 2005: these berries immediately became one of the best sellers of the range.

"It is a great result, which has made us understand how the Noberasco 1908 format is perfect as an 'area test' to launch new products.

"The Goji phenomenon is a testament to the increasing interest of consumer for the nutritional properties of dried fruit. It is no longer considered a fat product but rather an essential component of a balanced and healthy diet. Red fruits are the privileged drivers of this new positive trend."

The manager concludes by saying that "the 'progetto Benessere' (Well-being project) is the primary objective of our company strategy, for which we need suitable organisation and specific R&D competences."
