Plantanova

"Mexico: "Consumption of healthy good quality products on the rise"

Plantanova, founded in 2008, is part of the Dutch corporation Grow Group, and like its various subsidiaries, it's a company dedicated to the production of seedlings of grafted tomatoes, watermelons, peppers, cucumber and, recently, eggplants.

Plantanova's customers are primarily exporters, mostly in the area of protected crops. Pharis Rico, Plantanova's manager says that professional producers usually rely on propagators for the production of plants for each cycle. "We produce grafted plants by taking two different plants (pattern and variety) and combining their benefits in a new plant."

Plantanova is a client of other leading companies (many of them Dutch) that are engaged in the sale of seeds or substrates such as rockwool. "The industry grew exponentially during the 2000s and it is still growing. This has led to a consolidation of companies and the use of medium or high technology, adapted to Mexico's climate and how a business is run here," said Pharis.

There is also a trend in which exports reach new destinations. "We're not only exploring new markets, we are also changing crops," said Pharis.

"Five or six years ago, there was a big demand for large tomatoes, but now many customers are part of the market specialities, for example, because of the products' taste or sugar content, which has contributed to the growing popularity of Plantanova's products." According to Pharis, there is an increasing interest in a healthy diet in Mexico, which has led to an increased demand for organic products because the public is increasingly willing to invest in different or higher quality products.

"More and more supermarkets are beginning to have special areas for these products, which benefits producers and, consequently, companies like ours; hence, the prospects are very good," added the general manager.
