Worldwide production of watermelon reaches 105.372 billion kilos

According to the statistical agency of the United Nations FAO, worldwide production of watermelons amounted to 105,372 billion kilos in the year 2012, the last year for which that agency has worldwide data available.

China led the ranking with a production of 70,000 billion kilos, 66.43 percent of the total. Turkey occupied the second place with 4,044 billion kilos (3.84%), followed by Iran with a production of 3,800 billion kilos, 3.60 percent of the total.

The fourth position was occupied by Brazil, which produced 2,079.55 billion kilos, 1.97 percent of the total. In fifth place was Egypt with 1,874.71 billion kilos (1.78 %), followed by the United States with 1,770.63 billion kilos (1.68%), Algeria with 1,495.08 billion kilos (1.42%), Russia with 1,453.31 billion (1.38%), Uzbekistan with 1,350 billion kilos (1.28%), and ranking tenth was Kazakhstan with 1,154.90 billion kilos, 1.1 percent of the world's total watermelon production.

Mexico occupied the eleventh place with 1,033.52 billion kilos produced (0.98%). Following are Spain, with a production of 853.6 billion kilos of watermelon, 0.81 percent of the world production, the Ukraine, which in 2012 produced 653.1 billion kilos of watermelon, 0.62 percent of the worldwide production.

During the last five years, watermelon production in the world has increased continuously. In 2008 production amounted to 94,656 billion kilos, in 2009 it totalled 98,737 billion kilos, and in 2010 it exceeded the hundred billion barrier, with a total of 101,342 billion kilos. World production in 2011 was of 103,310 billion kilos, and in 2012 production amounted to 105,372 billion kilos of watermelon.
