Rick Mengers, ZON fruit & vegetables:

"Reasonable asparagus price, considering the kilos harvested"

The asparagus season started early this year. "The production usually expected at the beginning of May are on the market at the moment. The outside cultivation is around two and a half weeks ahead of other years. We're peaking at the moment, and this will probably stay this way next week, after which the supply will probably drop a little," expects Rick Mengers of ZON fruit & vegetables.

"We hope to head towards the end of the season gradually, without too many peaks in supply. At the moment we can't complain about the price, 4 to 4.50 Euro for Double-A, considering the amount that has been harvested. I hope we can keep the price level. The demand from the supermarkets is reasonably good. The offers are also nicely spread out, apart from in the week before Easter, as they couldn't be given away then."

"As far as asparagus sales are concerned, the demand is mainly domestic and from Belgium. There is little heading to France at the moment, they have enough of their own product for now, as do Germany and Spain. But if the production there falls our product will become more attractive again," concludes Rick.
