Fruit imports increase in Q1 to 4,496 tons at Zhongshan Port

Zhongshan Inspection and Quarantine Bureau reports that in the first quarter of this year, the Zhongshan Port imported 4,496 tons of fruit, already 75% of last years total imported weight. The first quarter amounts to 13.35 million USD.

Two of the main reasons for the increase in imported fruits this year is because the demand is high, and imported fruits can be sold at a higher price, resulting to higher profits. Zhongshan port imports are mostly grapes, including black currant and red grapes, primarily imported from Peru and India. In the first half of the year most local grapes are not yet available in the market. Therefore there is a huge demand for imported grapes at this time of the year.

The Bureau added that imported fruits have higher requirements in customs clearances, inspection, and quarantine. They try to prioritize the release of these imported fruits so that they could be sold in the market without any delays and consumers can buy them fresh.

The Bureau also cautions consumers, when purchasing imported fruits, to check the packaging of the fruit. The packaging box must contain the name of fruit, it’s country of origin, etc. And all imported fruits should have the Bureau’s "Entry Inspection and Quarantine of Goods Certificate" before it is allowed to be sold in the markets.
