US (CA): Good demand for berries

The holiday pull from Easter and Mother's Day has helped make for good demand for strawberries and blueberries. Mild weather has made for good quality, which has, in turn, also contributed to good demand.

“Our volume is tracking very nicely with customer demand on both strawberries and blueberries this spring,” said Cindy Jewell, director of marketing for California Giant Berry Farms. That volume has been doing well, in part, because of stable weather. Because of mild weather, Jewell noted that all districts are ahead in volume this year, and quality has also been good.

“Due to mild weather conditions, the quality of berries has been excellent providing very large and flavorful fruit,” said Jewell. “Prices are strong due to quality and good demand with the spring holidays stacking up together. Having Easter and Mother's Day closer really helps to build sustained momentum through April and into May.”

Cal Giant is currently harvesting strawberries from Oxnard up to Watsonville, with weekly numbers rising as days get longer and nights get warmer. Blueberries are seeing similar results with harvesting transitioning from the coast to Central Valley volume.
