Verhagen AGF from Reusel started out as a mixed farming company with the sales of potatoes to individuals as an extra activity. This went so well that soon green beans were added to the assortment. After few years the horticultural branch was added to make the assortment complete and now asparagus, celery, savoy, leek, celeriac, cabbage etc are grown.
A farm shop was built on the front of the building in 1990 and since then the assortment has been provided with exotics, citrus and fruit by wholesaler Harrie Goesten. The shop was renovated again in 1994 and a professional cutting kitchen was added to meet growing demand. "The farm shop was an excellent choice," says Bart Verhagen, who runs the company with his brother Jan.
"A busy period is just ahead for us. We are located on the through road in Reusel and a lot of (cycling) traffic comes our way,' says Bart. Verhagen AGF's most popular products are asparagus, cut vegetables and raw salads, which are now available in thirty varieties. The company also foresees catering business in the area with the full fruit and vegetable package.
Recently, the farm shop's appearance was changed drastically. "I saw an article on AGF.nl about the new plastic crates with the appearance of wood by Polymer Logistics and immediately contacted them," says Bart. "These crates are perfect for the farm shop look. Everyone has blue crates, but these do the product justice."
Customer's reactions to the new crates are very positive. "Customers think the presentation is much better. And we're making more turnover from it. People shop with their eyes. The better the presentation, the higher the sales. The crates work well price wise and we profit from the functionality of plastic with a wooden look," concludes Bart.
