Lagnasco Group PO

High hopes for early summer fruit across Italy

The 2014 summer fruit campaign will be remembered as one of the earliest ever. Peaches and nectarines are 3-4 weeks early even in Piedmont.

Giuseppe Termanini, director of the Lagnasco Group PO, says that "the first detachments will occur during the first week of July, and blueberries are expected as soon as early June."

"If fruit develops normally and if drops are limited, we shall have to proceed with thinning operations. It is a delicate phase though, as freezes in the next two weeks could damage crops. We shall see how things go, hoping that summer fruit will be early all over Italy to avoid overlaps."

As regards the other fruit sold by the PO, Termanini adds that "it is still too early to make an assessment, but apple production should be normal, whereas kiwis are still being affected by the PSA."
